Chapter 15

Dante

"I need you to go get that phone, Dante. It's stressing me out. Go pick it up. Where is it?"

I rolled over to the first light with Kenzi's long midnight hair hanging over my chest. "Sure, I'll go get it, but who's gonna watch out for you? I'm going to get one of the soldiers on 24/7 surveillance. I can't leave you wide open. I don't trust Lionel."

Kenzi splayed her fingers over my chest. "Dante, go and get the phone, please. I'm begging you. Don't worry about that shit. We can call any soldier over here, but they can't be Salvero boys. I used to trust them, but now not a single one of them suckers are trustworthy."

"You're right about that. Chill. I'll get the Ramirez boys—Andre and our boys, if they're not tied up to take you to work. I don't want Henry to know I've gone to New York. You need to call him and say something. You're the Don, after all."

Kenzi laid on her back, her full ebony breasts in full view. I stroked over her nipple, bending my mouth to its erectness. Kenzi closed her eyes for a minute but gently pushed me to the side. "Dante, no, get the phone. I'm gonna get a shower. I got a lot of shit to do today. Call me when you get there, and fucking be careful."

My head rebounded in frustration. Ever since the tragic revelation from my past, Kenzi didn't trust me. I could feel the mistrust in her every interaction with me. The way her eyes watched me carefully whenever I made a move. She'd gone from sexy ambivalence to eyeballing me down, and there was nothing I could do but wait for her to realize I was still the same guy from back in the day.

"Got it," I stated gruffly as Kenzi's shapely round ass jiggled out of bed, frustrated, my hard wood under the blanket. I sure as hell wasn't getting any until I worked this shit out. I waited until I heard the shower running, booking a round-trip flight due to fly out in four hours—no point in overthinking. I had to get in and get out. Five hours would place me there right before late afternoon, allowing me to get to the bank and retrieve the phone.

I booked and jumped up, my heart racing. A horrid flash of one of the worst days of my life popped up. Blood trickled down the side of her mother's face. The memory was so vivid I could envision the fork of the dried blood covering her face. I dry wretched, heart palpitations robbing me of oxygen for a minute.

Dante. Don't fall apart. Kenzi. Henry. You have to uphold the Omerta.

I swung my dead legs over the bed, my body freefalling into panic, but Kenzi, standing at the door with toast wafting through my nose, broke that. "Hey, you good? I'm about to skip out. Andre's taking me."

I ran a hand through my bed hair, turning to her.
